This summer, Starbucks told its customers to go green through a number of high-profile campaigns, including "Green Umbrellas for a Green Cause" and the online Planet Green Game (planetgreengame.com). Born in a holler in Eastern Kentucky, John Wezley Haywood saw life differently than children who grew up in more economically developed areas. He lived in a small community called Risner that was named for his Mother’s family. During this time both Haywood and his community were being changed by outside influences which came into the area by means of mass communication and corporate development. Many of the traditions that had been handed down in the Eastern Kentucky region were forgotten. Today, from his home in Knott County, he paints the real Kentucky. His artwork wallows in the stereotypes and pays tribute to lifestyles that make Kentucky and Appalachia one of the most unique and celebrated places in the entire world. The paintings tell stories of hell raising hillbillies, hardened mine workers, mountain musicians, and more.

As a fine arts photographer, one of my main interests is in hand coloring black and white photographs that I print in my darkroom. Many of my photographs were taken during my travels over the last several years. Others depict local subjects such as local landmarks, nature - zoo animals, flowers, city scenes, waterscapes, etc. I use B & W film and some photographs are sepia toned to show warmth before they are hand colored using Marshall Photo Oils, photo tinting pens, and/or Prisma pencils.

The University of Louisville has helped foster the development of the visual arts in Louisville for almost 70 years. The University's original art department, founded in 1937, became the Allen R. Hite Art Institute in 1946, in recognition of the bequest of Allen R. and Marcia S. Hite. The Institute has 23 full-time and 10 part-time faculty members. Fine Arts students at the University of Louisville can earn a B.A., B.F.A., M.A., M.A.T. or Ph.D. in a variety of disciplines. Martha Wetter, the creator of Sawhorse Jewelry Designs, has loved horses since she can remember. Growing up in Chicago, she started riding on a sawhorse she found in a neighbor's garage, with a blanket for a saddle and a jump rope for a bridle. When she and her husband moved to Kentucky to attend school, Martha took the opportunity to acquire a real, live horse of her own. Martha now lives on a farm in Woodford County, KY with her husband and nine horses. By day she works as a clinical psychologist and after hours she rides horses and makes jewelry that attempts to express her feelings about horses. She named her business Sawhorse Jewelry Designs in honor of her very first riding experience.
